Angine De Poitrine - Angine De Poitrine Vol I
Hailing from Quebec, Angine De Poitrine have been in existence since 2019, although, given their adherence to a Dada aesthetic, it's entirely plausible they've been around for all time (plus five minutes). The duo, who retain their anonymity through some truly peculiar costuming, originally released Vol I in 2024. Thanks to their recent rise in popularity, the album is now being reissued. A masterclass in microtonal repetition, the band utilise loops and unusual time signatures to create hypnotic soundscapes that are easy to get lost in. Drawing on jazz, math rock, psychedelia and prog, they manage to transcend their influences and create a musical world entirely their own. Importantly, without the band's visual aesthetics, their music still stands perfectly well on its own. 'Ababa Hotel' establishes a relentless groove with its funk bass and noodling guitars, before giving way to a section of stop-start brilliance. It wrongfoots the listener, breaking the hypnotic spell momentarily before slipping into a syncopated jazz freakout. The woozy 'Sahardnieh' lumbers like a terrifying drunken ghoul, its cyclical riffs never quite resolving, instead spiralling off into uncharted, slightly dangerous territory. Opening track 'Sherpa' sets out the band's raison d'etre perfectly, fusing what feels like a Turkish folk influence with increasingly frantic loops, forceful repetition, and occasional bursts of skewed rock bombast. It's a rhythmic delight and a perfect introduction to the wonky world of Angine De Poitrine.
