Curtis Mayfield - Curtis
Curtis Mayfield's Curtis is a debut that arrived in September 1970, just as he stepped out from The Impressions and into a fully self-directed solo career. Released on his own Curtom label and produced by Mayfield himself, it pushed beyond his earlier pop-soul sound toward funk, psychedelic soul and sharper social commentary. The album's view of urban Black America is right there from the opening blast of "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go" to the searching uplift of "Move On Up."
What makes Curtis endure is how it balances message with musical detail. Mayfield folds rich orchestration, driving rhythms and a more expansive studio sound into songs about racial identity, inequality and resilience, with "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" and "Miss Black America" making those themes explicit. At the same time, "The Makings of You" shows how elegantly he could shift into a softer, more intimate register without losing the album's larger purpose.
This reissue preserves a record that helped define the shape of 1970s soul and funk: personal, politically alert and musically adventurous in equal measure. If you know Mayfield first for Super Fly, Curtis is the place to hear the solo blueprint being set down in real time.
